How to Start up and Parallel a Generator?

  1. First check engine oil levels such as L.O sump, turbocharger oil level, governor oil level, rocker arm bank oil level (if fitted).
  2. Check jacket cooling water header tank level.
  3. Ensure indicator cocks are open, startup L.O priming pump then bar engine over( ensure turning bar is removed)
  4. Blow through engine on air and close indicator cocks.
  5. Start the engine.
  6. Check all parameter are correct- lube oil temperature and pressure, exhaust temp, JCW pressure and temperature, S.W cooling pressure.
  7. Allow the engine to warm up and when satisfied that everything is ok.
  8. Engine can be paralleled as follows
  9. Ensure the voltage of the machine to be parallel is the same as the bus bar voltage. Ensure the frequencies of both machines are same, the frequency of incoming generator can be adjusted using the speed control.
  10. Select the machine to be paralleled on the synchroscope selector. The synchroscope should then start to rotate, it should be rotating in a clockwise direction slowly. If it is rotating in an anticlockwise direction, this means the speed of the incoming generator is too slow or if it is rotating fast clockwise, the speed of the incoming generator is too fast, this is adjusted using the speed control.
  11. When the needle of the synchroscope is at the 5 to 12 position, this allows the incoming machine to take a slight amount of load when coming on the switchboard and also prevent the machine tripping on reverse power.

Bilge Injection Valve

Bilge Injection is a valve that enables the engine room bilges to be pumped out directly overboard in the event of an emergency such as flooding. The valve is normally fitted to the end of a branch connection with the main sea water suction line. This enables large main seawater cooling pumps to be used as a bilge pump in an emergency. Merchant ships have a marking on their hull know as the Plimsoll line or the Plimsoll mark, which indicates the limit until which ships can be loaded with enough cargo, internationally, the Plimsoll line on a ship is officially referred to as the international load line.
